Hi all! Yes, October has (at last!) come and gone. I've got lots of pictures of the crazy final week of October, but I'll probably start working on those tomorrow. However, I've got another project I'm beginning this week that I will hopefully report on a few times in the near future.
A friend of mine in my LDS ward has invited several of us to participate in a Healthy Me Challenge, which will take place over the next six weeks. Basically, it's a set of daily personal goals that each of us will try to stick to from today through the middle of December. We have a chart to keep track of our progress, and there's a basic points system to evaluate how you're doing. At the end of the six-week period, the person with the highest score will get a cash prize! Yes, we are putting money on this thing...it makes it feel a lot more "official" to me!
Some of the daily goals are things I've already been working on over the last few months...especially exercising and watching my weight. I don't think I will exercise every day, but I think I will do better than some, with fewer small kids left at home to worry about. I am going to have to focus hard on eating my fruits & vegetables; this is the time of year when all the sweet goodies threaten to overwhelm the house...and my digestive system.
The main reason I'm participating in the Healthy Me Challenge (besides the cold hard cash!) are the spiritual items on that daily checklist. Daily scripture study. Daily personal prayer. Daily writing in your journal (for me, that's this blog!). Daily fulfillment of a personal goal. These things, which seem so simple, have been very hard for me to maintain as the pace of my life has quickened. I hope that by paying more attention to these small but essential spiritual "snacks," my mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being will get more focused and resilient.
For my personal goal, I am going to try and read one book to each of my girls every day. Yes, that sounds simple, but I have been terrible at it in recent months. Some days I don't read to them at all; other times, I read one for all three. I can't promise to read lengthy novels every day, but I do want them to see that I enjoy our reading time together, that I value their company, and that reading is an important activity I hope they enjoy.
I'm excited about this challenge; I have no idea how well I'll do, but I like the motivation it gives me. Wish me (and everyone else in my ward) good luck! I'll try to keep you updated via the blog when I am able.
PS. I realize the Challenge specifies that I must make a personal journal entry every day; I can't promise a new blog entry every day this November! It just won't happen. Long gone are my lofty ambitions of 2011, when I blogged every day in November for National Blog Posting Month. However, I do think I will be able to visit the blog every day...even if it's only to make a few cosmetic tweaks, edit a paragraph, or post a few more photos. So you probably won't see a blog post every day, but the posts you do see will be several days in the making. I hope that will "count"!
