An Early-Summer Grab-Bag of Family Goodness

Yes...as the title implies, there will be much randomness in this post, which came about as I sorted through my photos from the last two months. While I enjoyed writing about Celeste's dance class, it's time to mention what the rest of us have been up to for the last month or so. NOTE: much of my content has been determined by what photos I found on my phone. Because I'm visually driven like that.
Speaking of me...this is the position you might have found me in on many occasions this spring. Prone on the couch, trying to rest while little girls pester me. I was (at least for a little while) feeling pretty sleepy and nauseous for most of the month of May. It's a wonder I was able to take as many pictures as I did.
I did manage to cook (a little bit), and I received a fun Mother's Day present, in the form of a Ninja blender kit. I'd heard good things about the Ninja, so my husband (like the sweetie he is) bought me one--it actually has three separate containers of varying sizes, all with the multi-bladed Ninja core, and all run by the same portable Ninja engine. My verdict: so far, so good! I've blended smoothies, milkshakes, soups, and a few other things with this baby, and so far it shows no wear and tear. It's too early to comment much on its durability, but I like its speed and thoroughness.
Nate has tried out some "new looks" for himself this spring...he's slowly but surely becoming the Man of the House! Thankfully, the unorthodox fashion ensemble shown above was a one-time thing. Our (very minor) home improvement project this summer has been to replace all our toilet seat covers. The new covers can't be slammed, and they're much cleaner than the old, worn-out ones that we inherited with the house. We hope this will add many more years to the toilets...they all work pretty well, but they definitely needed a little upgrade in the looks department.

Late May was Nathan's birthday, as well. Besides his big taste-testing party, we had our own family celebration for him, complete with pie. Nathan is not a fan of cake in general...he much prefers pie, given the choice. As a result, every year on his birthday we have Birthday Pie--usually two or three kinds, with at least one being a new type of pie we've never tried before. However, we always make his favorite (mixed berry pie), too. Here's Lorelai, helping out to roll the crust...she's doing more and more to help out around the house!
Lorelai also finished first grade at the end of May (on Nathan's birthday, in fact!). She learned a lot this year and got a better work ethic, too...I am very proud of her. About a week before school ended, her school had a Career Day, in which the kids all showed up dressed in clothes that would match their desired future occupation. Lorelai has been really into cows lately. In fact, she's decided to be a Cow Scientist when she grows up, and here's her interpretation of what such a scientist would look like...
Very cute (and her friends were pretty impressed by the bucket, too!).
Aurora has started talking up a storm...it's even possible to have mini-conversations with her now, even if most of them revolve around getting snacks and having piggyback rides. She has soooo much energy, and she is constantly going at full speed to stay caught up with her sisters. Which is why I have to post these next two pictures, because they not only show the results of her constant cavorting, but are actually adorable in their own right ...
As for summer vacation, it's been pretty standard so far. Lorelai complains about being bored a lot (ah, the joys of having a school-age kid in the summer), so I've had to scramble a bit more than usual to come up with stuff to do. I've planned a few fun, unusual activities (more about that in my next post), but a lot of our summertime kicks have come from the usual sources:
Visiting the playground (when it's not too hot, at least);
Having friends over to play (and eat Otter Pops with them on our trampoline);
Visit McDonald's for ice cream cones/PlayPlace time (on this occasion, we got to see Ronald McDonald himself!);
Take a trip to the zoo (I think I will have a few dozen of these "little girls in the big egg" photos from the zoo over the years; it will be fun to make a collage of them someday to see how they have grown!);
Take a few trips to Taco Bell (the girls' new, unexpectedly favorite, place to eat out);
And play with Tuck, our beautiful hamster who is deeply beloved by all the girls. He seems to tolerate our presence, but he clearly really enjoys it when we clean his cage and feed him, so we'll take all the approval we can get from a finicky rodent.
